Faith or Worry – Which One Is It?

August 28, 2018

There is only room in your mind for one – faith or worry. We’ve all heard this before, right? And if we believe it to be true, why is the choice so hard sometimes?

For me, I can attest to the fact that any time I worry, it is an inevitable result of fear. Fear of uncertainty, the unknown, or something I can’t control. I have constant worries in my life, and ones that come up based on unforeseen circumstances. But nonetheless, they exist. And more recently, I’ve been exploring the question of Why?

Why do I fear?

Matthew 6: 30 says, “And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?”

It’s right there for us to see. God will take care of us. So why is it so difficult for us to let Him? I really don’t want all that responsibility, do you? No thank you! Yet, time after time, I find myself trying to control or alter situations in hopes that it will turn out the way I think I want it to. Anyone else do the same?

When you feel tempted to fill your mind with worry, remember this instead:

God will provide for you: no matter how dark your circumstances, He will give you what you need. Not what you think you need, but what you truly need. Look beyond what the world tells you, and look to God for what truly sustains the peace in your heart. That’s what He’ll fill you with. Welcome that in with open arms, and you’ll eventually learn to feel peace even in the midst of the darkest of times.

God will guide you to light in His timing: You may be searching for success, healing, better finances, or a decision gone bad. Whatever it is, God will lead you to it in His timing. This may be the toughest one to accept. The weight of what we are going through can feel so incredibly heavy, leaving us wondering if this will ever get better. Instead of searching for how to get out of your mess, try searching for peace. Search for what it is that you can learn from this. Search for God (I promise, if you do, you’ll find Him). One of my favorite verses right now is Galatians 6:9, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time, we will reap a harvest of blessing if we do not give up.” Keep going, friend, your blessing is coming.

God will turn everything into good: He does this so that you can live out His purpose for you. Human nature may get in the way of His plans for you, but He can work it all out. He can turn messes into beautiful stories. You just have to give Him the room to be faithful.

Look, I get it. We’re all control freaks. But I’ve learned the hard way that we need to back off and let God do His thing.

Because He loves us and cares for us.

Because His plans for us are always better than our own.

And because faith is always the better option than choosing fear.
